In 1919 Chaplin founded United Artists Corporation with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith#George Bernard Shaw said Chaplin was "the only genius developed in motion pictures". Some would say that still holds true#In 1918 Chaplin's $1m contract with First National for eight two-reel films was - at the time - the biggest in movie history#"A King in New York", made by Chaplin in 1957, was deemed so anti-American it was never released there#"If you have a bit of a message, it's better to put it over through business [visual jokes and stunts] than through words - better for me anyhow" said Chaplin#"It doesn't matter how serious the story is - it all amounts to a bit of business or a gag. In the end, everything is a gag" said Chaplin#In addition to scripting, directing and starring in his own films Chaplin also performed his own stunts. In 1921 he was nearly burnt to death when a stunt went wrong on the set of "Vanity Fair"#In 1972 Chaplin received an Academy Award for "the incalculable effect he has had on making motion pictures the art form of this century."#In 1975, two years before his death, Charlie Chaplin was knighted by the Queen#Chaplin's daughter Geraldine also became a film actress and co-starred alongside Omar Sharif in the classic "Doctor Zhivago"
